SERIES: THE FORTY | 40 HADITH SERIES | HEAR - MEMORISE - CONVEY - No.1

ʿAudhu Billāhi min ash-Shayṭān al-Rajīm, Bismillāh al-Raḥmān al-Raḥīm. Alḥamdullilāhi Rabbil ʿAlamīn, waṣalatu wassalām ʿala rasūlillahil karīm, wa ʿala alihī wa aṣḥābī wa man tabiʿahum bi-iḥsān ilāʾ yawm al-dīn; wa baʿḍ. All Praise belongs and is directed to the Rabb of everything that exists, praise and salutations be upon His final beloved Messenger, Muḥammad , his revered family and his noble Companions and upon those who follow them in good until the end of times, to proceed,

Shaykh Badīʿ al-Dīn Shāh al-Rāshidī al-Sindhī (d.1416/1996) in this compilation of Forty ḥadīth referenced each ḥadīth to its source, as transmitted by Imām al-Tabrizī (d.741/1340) in his Mishkāt al-Maṣābīḥ and thus this compendium of Forty ḥadīth has been essentially drawn from the Mishkāt. I have referenced each ḥadīth to its original source in order to facilitate reference and referral back to the magnificent ḥadīth corpus.

This compendium of Forty ḥadith also has another unique significance which led to its publication, in that there are innumerable such compendiums of this genre, of the ḥadīth corpus, namely Forty Ḥadīth, however this is the last ever work of the Pakistani Ḥadīth Master, Shaykh Badīʿ al-Dīn al-Rāshidī al-Sindhī.

It was originally compiled in Sindhī, that is, translated into Sindhī and published with the Arabic. It was later reproduced in Urdu/Arabic, for the first time in Ramaḍhān 1425H/November 2004CE. It is thus being published for the first time in English/Arabic. All such and subsequent endevours in this regard, fall under the remarkable words of the Messenger of Allāh’s  when he said:

عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم قَالَ ‏ نَضَّرَ اللَّهُ امْرَأً سَمِعَ مَقَالَتِي فَوَعَاهَا وَحَفِظَهَا وَبَلَّغَهَا

May Allāh beautify a man who hears a saying of mine, so he memorises and conveys it as he heard it. (Tirmidhī, no.2658; al-Bazzār, Musnad, no.3416; Ṣaḥīḥ al-Jāmiʿ, no.2309.)

These are the words, that led us at Salafi Research Institute to bring as many compendiums of this genre. In-Shāʾ-Allāh.

The genre of Forty ḥadith compendiums is extensise, while being an integral and pivotal part of the hadith corpus. Early works on Forty ḥadīth are as early as the second century of Islam, which successively ascended exponentially. Some became so famed, that even after eight centuries, the Arbāʾīn (Forty) of Imām Nawawī (d.676/1277) is still taught, explained and memorised as a fundamental ḥadīth primer around the globe. Generally, compendiums of this nature followed a thematic structure, in that, the Forty āḥadīth compiled were regarding a specific subject, for instance, Tawḥīd, sunnah, methodology, manners, virtue, and many other themes. However, others were general and non specific and thus included many subjects.

In this particular compendium, Shaykh Badīʿ has taken Forty ḥadīth from Mishkāt and therefore it can be surmised, this work of Forty ḥadīth is a summary of Mishkāt. I pray that people learn, memorise and convey the divine Prophetic ḥadīth and that Allāh forgives Shaykh Badīʿ al-Dīn Shāḥ al-Rāshidī al-Sindhī  and has immense mercy on him, Āmīn.
